Phase 1, Post # 5: Unions and Global Cultures

In many workplaces, there is often a visible struggle in issues regarding people of different genders and people of minorities. In much larger companies such as Google, these issues can be more difficult to address, due to resistance from the large corporate heads. The article in the Los Angeles Times and onLabor higlight some of the challenges presented when workers attempt to gather and protest against workplace inequality. While it seemed that Google did not seem to take any action initially, they later took actions against the National Labors Relations Boards (NLRB), and later went to lengths to stop employees from communicating using email and G Plus. Through these actions, Google effectively cushioned the damage done to their public image, but engineered further problems regarding workplace inequality by preventing people from gathering together and protesting these actions

The struggle for workplace equality does not always stem from the faults by corporate heads attemping to stop their workers from gathering against them, but can also be in the workers and general population themselves. This issue was stressed in a Chinese lingerie store in Egypt, where the owners of the shop highlight the problem behind inequality between men and women. When asked about this inequality, the owners explained that "Here [Egypt] the women just stay home and sleep. If they want to develop, the first thing they need to do is solve this problem." In this example, inequality is not engineered from the companies, but rather from the people who live under a different culture and work ethic.
