While technology has helped many places in the city urbanize, it can also cause problems for other places as well. In the presentation given by Michael Higgins, one notable and extremely familar example that was given was our very own Downtown Brooklyn area, which has seen a lot of modernization over the last several decades. Through the generous amounts of funding given into investing in technology in that general area in various places in what is now the MetroTech Center, Downtown Brooklyn was able to grow to what it is today, with more and more buildings and residential spaces being built as time goes on. However good the benefits technology had on the residential area were, the negative effectsthat it had are also prevalent. The rent required to live in the Downtown Brooklyn area has also risen dramatically over the last several years, which has forced many people to vacate their homes and search elsewhere or face homelessness, due to their inability to meet the higher rent required to live there.
