Phase 2, Post #9

In the presentation given, we examined the prison education program offered by NYU. During this talk, we examined the programs mission to give the incarcerated the abilities and skillset to hopefully land a job or be ready to attend college classes on release from prison. One of the challenges that come out of trying to educate people in prison lie in the fact that a lot of the material that you would normally see in a classroom setting are not available for use in prison. Technology within the prison setting is extremely scarce, and anything coming in must be thoroughly examined by prison officials before given clearance for use in prison. This puts inmates at a severe disconnect from the outside world, as they have little to no access to the technology to have access to this information.

One of the great things that technology can do to help prison inmates is that when properly managed, it can help reconnect them to the outside world as well as give them the skillset needed to get a solid footing once they get released. In the prison outlined during the presentation, they had their own computer lab with open printers and everything. The computers and printers were all out in the open safely, due to the sense of trust that the prisoners have built the wardens and instructors, allowing them more access to said technologies to better their futures. However, this is hard to do lots of times, since a prison is meant to be a citadel of security and control, and too much access to technology is seen as a breach of said control, so when administering classes like this to inmates, most of their technology end up being dated and there lies little interaction to people from the outside world still. Nevertheless, the more time inmates spend with technology, the more in touch they can keep with the world.
