When it comes to creating things using skills and disciplines in engineering, makerspaces are one of the most imporant and most popular places that people go to for nurturing and practicing their love for engineering. While Tandon has its own amazing Makerspace that sees it use everyday, there is another makerspace in Brookyln that is larger, and supports people from various backgrounds outside of Tandon. Nearby the Hudson River, the Futurework Makerspace is one of the largest makerspaces in the city, spanning a total of 15,000 square feet and offering their services to everyone around the New York City area.
What really defines the Futurework Makerspace from other makerspaces is their ability to run as a community-based makerspace, despite being one of the largest makerspaces in New York. This is something that's very unique and very beneficial for the people who use the service of the makerspace, as it not only helps nuture their love and skills for engineering, but also connect them to a larger community of people, which can help develop close bonds with the people around you. Inclusion plays a huge part in making their makerspace successful and the makerspaces does well in trying to maintain this sense of inclusion by giving lessons and field trips to people in grade school, giving out free memberships to people that are struggling financially, or are coming from a financially struggling area, such as Sunset Park.
Through this larger community-based effort, the Futurework Makerspace proves itself to be one of the most inclusive makerspaces in the city, accepting people from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as providing education instructions to students from elementary to high school as well. New York City is a vast melting pot of ethnicity, age, and race, and the Futurework Makerspaces adopts those traits by being the community makerspace that it is, provided the support that New Yorkers need to further their interests in engineering and beyond.
